Recently BC Hydro has changed their net metering program and the changes have been very confusing for many people. Unfortunately we have heard on numerous occasions people offering their condolences, saying it’s too bad that BC Hydro has cancelled their net metering program. Fortunately, net metering has NOT been cancelled.

To clarify, let’s take a look at the following excerpt is from BC Hydro’s Website:

We’re changing eligibility requirements for our net metering program. Applicants are now required to size their generation to meet their electricity needs.

You won’t be affected by these changes if you:

  • Are already a net metering customer, who has been approved to connect and generate electricity
  • Have applied for net metering and received an email confirming that your application is acceptable
  • Are proposing a generating facility sized to generate an amount of electricity that isn’t more than what you require for your own needs each year.

“Applicants are now required to size their generation to meet their electricity needs.”

This simply means that BC Hydro doesn’t want you to make money with solar energy. You can still save money, reduce your electrical bills, and even get to net zero if you like.

Have no fear, the Net Metering is alive and well, in fact FortisBC has been running this kind of net metering program for the last several years.
